Access to Information and Privacy
As of January 1, 2012, HHHS became subject to Ontario's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). FIPPA provides public access to information and the protection of personal privacy, the two key principles of the Act. HHHS values these principles and strives to protect the privacy of individuals whose personal information we hold and provides them with a right of access to their own personal information.
For the purpose of FIPPA, personal information does not include personal health information, which is subject to the provincial Personal Health Information Protection Act.
Access to information is subject to limited and specific exemptions, some of which are mandatory, while others are discretionary. In addition, there are certain exclusions to access where FIPPA does not apply. FIPPA outlines requirements for the collection, use, disclosure, retention and disposal of personal information.
Freedom of Information and Privacy Co-ordinator
The Office of the Freedom of Information (FOI) and Privacy Co-ordinator has primary responsibility for administering FIPPA as delegated by the Chair of the HHHS Board of Directors. All formal requests under the Act must be directed to the Freedom of Information and Privacy Co-ordinator.
